ABOUT ME:
I started baking when my son started preschool. I wanted to make dinosaur cookies to match what he was bringing in for show and tell. From there, my baking took off. Be it holidays, field trips, or class projects, I decorated COOKIES, CAKES, CUPCAKES, and CHOCOLATE SUCKERS – all to match – whatever the theme. I had a blast!
Over the years, people started saying: “You should open a bakery.” I thought they were just being kind. But, it got my husband to thinking. And, one Christmas he went a little crazy, and bought a ton of extra baking supplies for me.
The next step was to start looking around for someone like me. I wanted to pick their brain, but, no one was doing anything similar.
It began with a lot of trial and error. To feel out the waters, I placed an ad at a couple of neighboring schools, trying to sell my 3D BUNNY CAKES. They were a hit. I sold over 20 of them. A couple of months later, Calgary’s first big Comic Con came to town, and I thought, with all of my sci-fi and cartoon molds, I could make a go, selling them at a similar event. People went crazy! We couldn’t refill my displays fast enough. The feeling was so great!
But, what to do with my little home-based business? My answer was: Craft fairs. This got me, and my work, to all different parts of the city. Getting my name out there was great, and seeing people’s responses to my work was even better. You can’t help but smile when you see a super-cute cookie staring up at you with a pair of googly eyes.
So, here I am, over five years later, each year expanding just a little bit more; renting a kitchen when needed, but with hopes of one day having a commercial kitchen of my own.
